Cat's on the prowl,
Dog howls at the moon.
But their friend, the Night Owl,
Shows WHOO knows every tune.
Yes...this Halloween...they're masquerading as a trio!
Suzi Wesson and Doug Balfour are back at the Pubaret, once again accompanied by their good friend, the extraordinary talented Bob Hewus, on bass. In addition to their usual stock of goodies, they'll be dishing out some devilish ditties, spooky songs and terrifying tunes. They may even dress up for the occasion. Be careful you don't fall under their spell...or you may feel Bewitched...Bothered...or even...Bewildered. Could it be Magic? Naw....probably just Superstition.
Thirty years ago, Suzi and Doug performed together at Curtains Up, where they discovered they had sympathetic musical tastes. Hitting spots like the Groaning Board, Fitzgerald's, and the Café on the Park, they performed jazz, blues, rock 'n roll, music theatre and whatever eclectic tunes took their fancy. Although life and work eventually took them in different directions, they found opportunities to work together, including an evening of original pieces, Together Again for the First Time, as part of the Harbourfront Swing Shift Cabaret series.
Subsequently, Doug has played, conducted and arranged just about every style of music going. An accomplished classical pianist, composer and accompanist, he has also music directed shows across Canada including Forever Plaid and Ain't Misbehavin'. He's played everything from big shows Wicked, Phantom of the Opera, Ragtime and Sunset Boulevard to big bands as a member of the Jessie Award winning big band for Forever Swing to Dixieland. He's also a mean rock 'n roll player, having toured for a number of years with The Fridgidaires, a five-piece 50's and 60's band. Earlier this year, armed only with his tux, he braved the Knights of Ni to play the Vancouver Arts Club production of Spamalot. Doug has recently acquired a new, highly strung, keyed-up best friend, who is teaching him that there is, indeed, a fine way to treat a Steinway.
This year, Suzi appeared as the Judge in Chris John and Kevin Fox's No Chance in Hell, mounted at the 2014 Toronto Fringe Festival, where it won both a Patron's Pick award and a Best of Fringe extension at the Toronto Centre for the Arts. An actor/singer, Suzi toured extensively with Les Misérables, joining the original Toronto run in progress, and going as far afield as Honolulu and Anchorage. Other favourite productions include Oliver!, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-moon Marigolds and The House of Martin Guerre, where she shared the stage with her then-unborn youngest son. A songwriter herself, Suzi composed and music directed The 401 Show for the Upper Canada Playhouse in Morrisburg. She currently keeps her hand in by writing music for a much younger audience, as an Orff Instructor at the Toronto District School Board, where she tries usually unsuccessfully to stay out of treble.
In addition to his many musical talents, Bob is also very brave. He has offered to check out that mysterious noise in the basement. Bob...Bob...don't go in there!
Doug, Suzi and if he survives the basement Bob look forward to spending All Hallows Eve with you. Dress up...dress down....No rules. Come as you are, as you were, or as you'd like to be!
They're heeeeere...
