"Mother" screening at PUSAN WEST
[2009/129min/35mm/Color]
With his fourth feature, Mother, Bong Joon-ho returns to the world of murder mystery that recalls his critically acclaimed Memories of Murder (2003). Whereas the Memories of Murder is a subtle critique of the repressive era of 1980s Korea, Mother presents a sharp probing eye into the traditional Korean image of mothers who would sacrifice anything for their children. The protagonist mother makes living by providing herbs and acupuncture service to her neighbors. Her only Raison d'tre is her twenty-eight-year-old, a mentally retarded son Do-joon. When a neighborhood girl is brutally murdered, Do-joon is charged with the killing and the mother is determined to prove him innocent. A gripping story of a mothers intense love for her son, Mother presents the audience with a question of how far will a mother go for the protection of her child? Bong also plays with the TV persona of actress Kim Hye-ja whose superb acting adds tremendous intensity to the film and also casting of the Asian idol star Won Bin as the retarded son.
