Central Manufacturing District Walking Tour
Join Preservation Chicago and Landmarks Illinois on a walking tour of Bridgeport's Central Manufacturing District (CMD) on Sunday November 2, 2014 from 1:00-3:00pm. Established at the turn of the 20th century by the Chicago Junction Railway and primarily built between 1905 and the 1920s, the CMD was the first planned industrial district of its kind in Chicago, and arguably in the United States.
Although the District has undergone demolition, fire damage, and disinvestment over the course of the last century, much of its ground-breaking architecture and plan remain for us to explore. The tour will visit some of its intact industrial landmarks, discuss current and future threats, and look at some exciting examples of re-use coming to the CMD.
Highlights will include the CMD's original bank building (now the Chicago Community Bank), the Bridgeport Art Center on the banks of the south branch of the Chicago River, and a largely intact original streetscape at 37th and Iron streets. The tour will conclude across from McKinley Park at the magnificent 1917 Pershing Road Development, which is home to the Union Freight Station, U.S. Army Depot buildings, and U.S. Cold Storage headquarters. Totaling over 2 million square feet of interior space, these buildings were among the largest concrete structures in the world at the time of their construction.
The tour will be led by Preservation Chicago Director of Advocacy Erica Ruggiero and board member Susannah Ribstein. It will require approximately 1.5 miles of walking, and will end at the intersection of S. Damen Ave. and W. Pershing Blvd.
