"Old Partner" screening at PUSAN WEST
[2008/75min/DVCAM/color]
A documentary about a thirty-year companionship between an old farmer and his old cow. Mr. Choi, a deaf and crippled farmer in his 80s has been working on the field with his cow for more than thirty years. The cow is almost forty years old and is nearing his death. For Choi, the cow is his best friend, best farming tool and his only private vehicle. His wife keeps complaining that he cares about nothing but the cow. Despite her nagging, the farmer Choi keeps working with his cow everyday. One day, the local vet announces that the cow is not going to survive till the end of the year.
Old Partner became a surprise hit in Korea last January becoming the first documentary to draw more than 1 million spectators. The director dedicates this extraordinary and touching documentary to All the cows and fathers of this land who sacrificed themselves to raise us, the children. The documentary also shows one of the distinct characteristics of Korean independent documentary filmmaking: that filmmakers invest long time to win trust of his/her subject to bring out the genuine everyday life and feelings.
