Promoting Design Thinking in Your Children with Erica Iannotti
Design thinking is critical to an innovation economy. We can't possibly imagine what jobs our children will some day have. As parents, we can encourage our kids to be curious about their world, about the way things work both tangible and intangible. So much of their school lives are focused on deliverables, testing, following directions, etc.
This structure isn't necessarily bad; of course we want our kids to master particular skills. But I argue that design challenges give kids opportunities to be creative within a particular problem. They learn skills through solving that problem, rather than the traditional way where they learn facts then take a test or do a project to proved they get it. When they learn in this "flipped" way, they understand more, retain more, and enjoy it more.
Kids deserve and are ready for more agency in their learning. As parents we should focus less on the product and more on the process. Come hangout at the COG for an engaging discussion about making with kids as a way to amp up their excitement for learning!
