Making Contact, Making Connections, Making Community
Community Living is, of course, more than living in the community. In support of people with disabilities, effort has been made to facilitate connections and make opportunities for friendships. In doing so, we sometimes miss the obvious. This workshop will suggest a variety of differing connections that serve to make life celebratory. Using examples and stories, practical approaches that lead to an increased quality of life will be outlined.
Dave Hingsburger has an M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Toronto and a B.A. in Pyschology/Special Education from the University of Victoria (British Columbia). His life work has been among people with developmental disabilities going back to the mid-1970's. Among his many roles currently is providing training and consultation to agencies regarding issues such as sexual misbehaviour, sexual victimization, self-esteem, transition from institution to community and dealing with behaviour difficulties. He is the author of numerous books on these topics. He is the recipient of many awards and honours for the work he has done promoting the full inclusion of people with developmental disabilities into the community at large.
