Money-Driven Medicine provides the essential introduction Americans need to become knowledgeable in healthcare reform. Produced by Academy Award winner Alex Gibney (Taxi to the Dark Side; Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room) and based on Maggie Mahars acclaimed book, Money Driven Medicine: The Real Reason Health Care Costs So Much, the film offers a behind-the- scenes look at how our $2.6 trillion a year healthcare system went so terribly wrong and what it will take to fix it. It is the only film to explore the economics underlying - and too often undermining health care delivery, and cuts through many of the myths, charges and counter-charges swirling the debate. Money-Driven Medicine explores how a profit-driven health care system squanders billions of healthcare dollars, while exposing millions of patients to unnecessary or redundant tests, unwanted procedures, and over-priced drugs and devices that, too often, are no better than the less expensive products. In candid interviews, doctors and patients tell the riveting and wrenching stories of a system where medicine has become a business that puts profits before peoples health. (USA, 2009, 90 min.)
