What are developmental movements? Did you know that all of our movements spring from the same source a primal movement "alphabet" that all people share? These original movements are our reflexes, "learned and practiced" in the womb and as we grow to become babies and toddlers.
Adults develop, too! We experience the reflexes later in life, as well! Because many of these reflexive movements are activated under stress, sometimes they can remain "frozen" in the body. When these "stuck" reflexes are triggered by a stressful situation, we may find ourselves repeating reflexive thought patterns, behaviors, and uncoordinated movements. To release the stress, we need to release the pattern.
Movement wires our brains. In this workshop, we "change our lives" by "changing our movements." We use our original movement language to change our habits, minds and hearts. The effects can reach into every corner of our lives health, physical coordination, relationships, creative expression, spirituality, work.
"I think my body had a delayed reaction to your workshop, in an extremely positive way. The best way I can describe is it that I've been on fire with my business over the past month. Business has come out of the woodwork, I got a new major responsibility at my part-time job, and I am more fearless in going after new business in my own practice. While I consider myself a high-energy person, my energy is currently the best it's ever been. Enjoying riding this wave!" Chris V.
Relationships. Reflexes are the movements that help us survive as infants turning, reaching, sucking and swallowing, crawling, walking. We are social animals, and our well-being depends upon our ability to engage in nurturing, productive, and playful relationships. In this new version of Change Your Movement, Change Your Life! we'll explore some of the reflexes that have to do with how we learn to bond with others, experience appropriate boundaries, and communicate with clarity and compassion.
Eve will provide some background about the development of each reflex movement. We will have opportunities to remember moments in our lives when we experienced these physical responses, and we will explore simple, practical techniques for relieving stress. Drawing on her training in authentic movement, body/mind centering, JourneyDanceTM, and folk dances of the world, Linda guides participants to re-create their own unconscious protective movements as conscious and personal expressions. Time for journaling is provided. The venue is a beautiful room with windows on three sides and a hard wood floor. Organic lunch (salad, grain, fruit) is provided - bring your own extras if you want them! The eating experience is actually part of the workshop - wait and see! All movement is optional, and participants are free to join the group or move privately, as they prefer. Linda Ugelow, M.A., is a founding member of the world music ensemble, Libana. As their principal dancer and choreographer, she has been dancing the music of the world for three decades, performing in Morocco, India, Bulgaria, and various other countries across the globe.
