SAN FRANCISCO, September 13, 2014 Mark Foehringer Dance Project|SF presents its sixth annual holiday production of Mark Foehringer's Nutcracker Sweets, a unique 50 minute version of the classic ballet Nutcracker specifically designed for families with young children.
Featuring live music from the MFDPSF Chamber Orchestra -- a chamber orchestra with 9 musicians -- and the return of former ODC dancer, Brian Fisher as Drosselmeyer, musical direction by Michael Morgan, set design by Peter Crompton, costume design by Richard Battle, lighting design by Patrick Hajduk and production direction by Frédéric O. Boulay. Nutcracker Sweets is an affordable, fun and zany rendition of this popular holiday tradition.
This year's production features talented dancers from MFDP|SF including: Brian Fisher as Drosselmeyer Marina Fukushima as Clara Jerry Lin as the Nutcracker Prince and Nephew
Also performing are LizAnne Roman-Roberts, Cooper Neely, Jetta Martin, Francesca Tan and Edward Oyarce for ensemble roles such as: Mouse King, Russian Trepak, Mother, Mouse Queen, Sugar Plum Fairy, Mother Ginger, Doll, Spanish, Asian Tea
As in years' past, Peter Crompton's whimsical and artful scenic design conjures up a fantastical, dreamlike world to set the stage.
"Nutcracker Sweets is a family-oriented rendition of the classic ballet Nutcracker," said Mark Foehringer, artistic director of Mark Foehringer Dance Project|SF. "The production features storytelling, dance theater, ballet and live chamber music. It is a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to enjoy the experience of seeing a live performance together."
Mark Foehringer Dance Project|SF is a professional contemporary dance organization based in San Francisco, California. In 2011, MFDP|SF celebrated its 15th anniversary season. Artistic director and choreographer, Mark Foehringer, has been developing shows for more than 20 years from the Joyce Theater in New York to Aruba and Perú and numerous venues in San Francisco.
Mr. Foehringer is the recipient of two Fulbright Scholar grants in Perú. In 2007, he was awarded his first Fulbright Scholar grant to hold residence with Ballet Nacional del Perú. In 2012, he was awarded a second Fulbright to teach at the Universidad Nacional de San Marcos BFA program.
Dancer Brian Fisher, performing the lead role of Drosselmeyer, has danced for many Bay Area choreographers and companies including ODC Dance San Francisco. He also danced in New York City for many years on Broadway in La Cage Aux Folles, and in national tours of the Music Man and Wizard of Oz Live. This is Brian's 16th season with MFDP|SF. He is a past Izzie winner (Isadora Duncan Dance Award), the Bay Area's celebration of the unique richness, diversity and excellence of Bay Area dance.
Michael Morgan, the musical director of the show, is the musical director for Oakland East Bay Symphony and Sacramento Philharmonic. He is also the artistic and music director of Festival Opera of Walnut Creek, a professor of conducting for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and is highly regarded as a champion of arts education and minority access to the arts.
Nationally recognized scenic designer, Peter Crompton's body of work includes ballet, opera, musicals, contemporary and period dramas, experimental works, and several world premieres. Mr. Crompton has won Bay Area Critic's Choice, Shellies and many Goodman Choice awards.
Costume-designer Richard Battle, is well-known for the costumes he has designed for West Bay Opera, as well as Michael Smuin at San Francisco Ballet, John Copley at San Francisco Merola Opera, Ron Guidi at Oakland Ballet, the American Conservatory Theater (A.C.T.), and the Lorraine Hansberry Theater of San Francisco. Mr. Battle has also been nominated for several Emmy Awards in makeup design.

About Mark Foehringer Dance Project|SF Mark Foehringer Dance Project|SF (MFDP|SF) was founded in 1996 to support and produce the work of choreographer and director, Mark Foehringer. MFDP|SF was incorporated as a 501c3 in 2003. MFDP|SF presents between 25 and 35 performances per year and has performed at more than 40 venues in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1996. MFDP|SF has presented works in New York City in 1999, 2000, 2005 and 2012; in Aruba in 1997 and in Peru in 2008 and 2012. The company performs diverse works that range from dance theater, contemporary ballet to site-specific work, opera and dance with themes for families and children. Our diverse programming reaches into many different communities. In 2009 in an effort to create a dance work for a family audience, Foehringer created a 50 minute danced story telling of the Nutcracker performed with live music. "Mark Foehringer's Nutcracker Sweets" received rave reviews for its originality and imaginative staging. It enjoys the sponsorship of San Francisco Examiner and KQED and is seen by more than 3,200 patrons each year.
