Muziki Roberson Quartet - Modern Jazz Piano with an Edge
Muziki Roberson is a gifted, inspired jazz pianist and composer who for the last two decades has thrived in some of the most challenging and creative environments the Bay Area jazz scene has to offer. For years, he was the keyboardist for the brilliant, jazz/funk/Latin/poetry group, Mingus Amungus. And for 12 years, Roberson was keyboard player and music director for the San Francisco Mime Troup. He's also performed (and toured Africa) with inventive jazz violinist Michael White.
For the first time in several years, Roberson is returning to the SF Bay Area jazz limelight as a group leader, fronting a dynamic band that includes saxophonist Dave Ellis, bassist Aaron Germaine, and drummer Babatunde Lea. Ellis has been a major saxophone star since he earned two California Music Awards in 1999 and came under the wing of legendary producer Orrin Keepnews. Lea, of course, is of the Bay Area's most revered musicians, a master drummer and teacher who has been inspiring audiences and students since the early 70's. Germain is a talented, much in demand Latin/jazz bassist, active with musicians/groups like flutist Gerald Becket and Orquestra Universal.
The band has been feasting on the exciting exploratory possibilities inherent Roberson's exciting compositions, causing sparks wherever they've performed. As Roberson simply states, All of the music is original and the band has fun.
