Kim Nalley with Kenny Washington - Dynamic jazz & blues vocals
"GOD, CAN THIS WOMAN SING! It's as if a vocalist from the great post-war blues and jazz combos had been transported to the end of the century." - David Feld, Blues Access Magazine
"Sultry voiced Kim Nalley brings an irresistibly sexy sense of swing, rhythmic dexterity and beautiful sound to the classics." - Andrew Gilbert, Down Beat
"Onstage, Kenny Washington is the Superman of the Bay Area jazz scene, a vocalist with an exuberantly supple tenor that glides effortlessly into the stratosphere. Capable of astounding improvisational flights, he can also croon like a '70s soul star (think Donny Hathaway or Al Green), with an emotional intensity that's bracing." Andrew Gilbert - San Francisco Chronicle
Kim Nalley topped the success of her 2003 CD, Need My Sugar, with this year's astounding She Put a Spell on Me, her powerful, heartfelt and hugely entertaining tribute to the great Nina Simone. SFStation gave the CD 4 stars, saying, "Nalley shows off her soaring, sultry vocals as she powers through an appropriately eclectic set of jazz, blues, showtunes and folk . . . . Invariably, her bold voice and impressive range will inspire comparisons to the likes of Dinah Washington and Ella Fitzgerald, but it's a tribute to Nalley that she distinguishes herself as a unique talent. . . ."
No secret to the music world at large, Kim Nalley has performed at most of the major Jazz festivals throughout the world, garnering rave reviews along the way, and performed with heavyweights from James Williams, Jimmy McGriff and Billy Higgins to Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony.
Nalley combines a lithe, beautiful sound and compelling sense of swing with just enough old-school razzle dazzle to create an instant and genuine rapport with her audience. Expect a swinging evening of standards in the tradition of Billie Holiday, Joe Williams, Ella Fitzgerald and, yes, Nina Simone, from a wonderful songstress and a great entertainer.
Kenny Washington
If you have never heard this New Orleans native sing before, get ready for a jaw dropping experience. Kenny is a jazz vocalist virtuoso. Emulating the classic styles of Johnny Hartman and Billy Eckstine, infusing colors of Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway, Kenny's freedom play approach, with over a four-octave range is awe inspiring. His tone on ballads is liquid, his scat is so rapid-fire, passionate, melodious and inventive that subsequent saxophone solos often pale, and his intonation is so precise that it becomes noticeable if the piano wasn't tuned that day. His range seems limitless. With a childhood background singing in gospel, Kenny is at home with the Blues as well as Jazz.
