Avotcja & Modupue - Poetry + Jazz/Blues & World Music
Sometimes the best way to understand a musician (other than listening to the music, of course) is to hear the voices of those who have already spoken:
"Poet, musician and DJ, Avotcja is on intimate terms with the Blues, grounded in their power and unafraid to speak the pain, the pride and the truth. Her words can make you laugh, cry, pray, get up and dance or vow to make your life a better thing. Avotcja and this extraordinary group of musicians, including Jon Jang on piano and Frances Wong on saxophones and flute, have created a new international music that is indeed beyond category."
- Elaine Cohen, Poet & Author
"This music mirrors the cultural crossroads of the Caribbean, a region that has absorbed the cultures of the people that have passed through there into a sensual multifaceted polyrhythmic stew. Avotcja's poetic sensibility brings out the creative powers in these extraordinary musicians and pushes them in new and exciting directions."
Two-time Grammy-nominated producer Gregorio "Greg" Landau, in his liner notes to Avotcja & Modupue's CD, Live at Yoshi's.
"A powerful, poetic, musical tour de force from a talented woman who knows what needs to be said and has the courage and chutzpah to say it loud and proud! Avotcja and Modupue will move you to tears, contemplation and action. They must be heard to be believed!"
- Melanie Berzon, KCSM-FM
"Infused with her generous spirit & talented tongue, Avotcja's Poetry & Music will carry you over. Catch a ride, as her wide wings swoop & sail. She wails!"
- Leslie Simon, Women's Studies & Project Survive, City College of San Francisco
Avotcja, backed by the incredible Jon Jang on piano, Francis Wong on sax and flute and a stageful of passionate, pulsing musicians, creates a roar of musical power and insight. An accomplished poet, Avotcja has been published in English & Spanish in the USA, Mexico & Europe, and in more Anthologies than she remembers.
She is a multi-instrumentalist who has opened for Betty Carter in New York City & Peru's Susana Baca at San Francisco's Encuentro Popular, played with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Bobi & Luis Cespedes, John Handy, Sonido Afro Latina, Dimensions Dance Theater, Black Poets With Attitudes, Nikki Giovanni, Diamano Coura West African Dance Company and Terry Garthwaite. And that's the short list.
Her Poetry and music has been recorded by Piri Thomas, Famadou Don Moye, Bobby Matos Latin Jazz Ensamble, and performed by The Purple Moon Dance Project.
In addition to all this, Avotcja is popular Bay Area DJ, heard on KPFA and KPOO, and the founder/director of "The Clean Scene Theater Project/Proyecto Teatral De La Escena Sobria". She teaches poetry, creative writing and drama in the public school system and, thanks to the California Arts Council, she is an Artist in Residence at the Milestones Project and the Penal System.
