Chainmail 101 with Blaise Hartley
Learn how to make chainmail! Chainmail (or more properly, "maille") is an ancient art, first used to make armor. Today, maille is used for lots more than just armor, including protective clothing, jewelry, art and fashions. Come and learn how to create fluid designs using steel, copper and even silver rings. The fabrication process requires very few tools, and is fun to learn! Great for cosplay, costumes or full-on medieval combat!
Required Supplies:
Two pair of pliers that fit your hand comfortably. We recommend that one pair be hook-nosed, and one chain-or-needle-nosed, but in either case, it is best to choose pliers that do not have teeth. A strong desire to bend metal to your will!
Optional supplies:
Several feet of the solid wire of your choice, preferably not extreme hardness and ideally in the 16-18 Standard Wire Gauge range. Wire will be provided for learning, but if you want to try something special, you are welcome to BYO! Flush-cut wire-clippers Viking helmets, bastard swords, and dwarves.
[Note:] If you would like to do some prior reading, the biggest and best source of mailling information on the internet is at the Maille Artisans' International League
