Smorgasbord: The Songs of Sweden
Last season, in partnership with the Nordic Heritage Museum, the SCC was proud to launch a multi-year series that focuses on the rich choral repertory of the Scandinavian countries. Following our salute to the traditional music of Norway in March of 2014, the SCC now turns to choral treasures from Sweden. Maestro Coleman has put together an attractive buffet sampling of Swedish-inspired music both classical and popular.
Sweden enjoys a long history of folk music, along with an impressive list of accomplished classical composers. Yet today, on a per capita basis, Sweden is one of the world's most successful exporters of popular music.
Smorgasbord: Songs of Sweden will present a wide array of Swedish choral styles, including the Lappland inspired "Biegga Louhte," the classical elegance of Wilhelm Stenhammar and Hugo Alfvén, the contemporary sounds of Sven-David Sandström and Jan Sandström. and finally concluding with works made internationally famous by two Swedish pop groups, ABBA and The Real Group.
Tre Korvisor (Three Choral Songs) by Wilhelm Stenhammar (18711927) Vårnatt (Spring Night) by Wilhelm Stenhammar Four Songs of Love by Sven-David Sandström (b. 1942) Aftonen by Hugo Alfvén (18721960) Biegga Luohte (Song to the Mountain Wind) Jan Sandström (b. 1954) Words by The Real Group composer Anders Edenroth (b. 1963) And selections by ABBA composers Björn Ulvaeus (b. 1945) and Benny Andersson (b. 1946) Co-Sponsored by the Nordic Heritage Museum
