Local Money Conference
The local nonprofit, Sustainable Resources INW is proud to announce a Local Money Conference, to be held the weekend of October 11 and 12 at the Unitarian Church, 4340 West Fort Wright Drive. The Conference will welcome six west coast experts in local investing, crowdfunding, impact investing and buy local cards.
Jenny Kassan, CEO of Cutting Edge Capital out of Oakland California, will be the keynote speaker. Kassan is a social entrepreneur, lawyer and expert in direct public offerings. "When I was in law school, I became interested in community development. A lot of the legal work that was happening didn't seem to go to the root of problem. As a result I became really interested in community economic development." says Kassan. Kassan's nonprofit, Cutting Edge Capital helps small businesses across the country raise capital from their communities, not just wealthy investors. Kassan is an expert in Direct Public Offerings, a financial tool that small businesses can use to legally sell shares to unaccredited investors. Kassan will be leading a workshop on Direct Public Offerings and navigating security laws at the end of the day on Saturday. The workshop is an additional cost of $50.
Saturday, October 11, the Conference will focus on innovative lending and capital development that is happening along the west coast. Presenters include Rachel Maxwell of Community Sourced Capital in Seattle, a nonprofit that provides loans to small businesses that are sourced from throughout local communities; Amy Pearl from the Change Xchange NW in Portland, an entity in the process of launching a regional stock exchange; as well as presenters from Community Funded, an online investment portal out of Colorado, and representaives from buy local incentive cards in Sonoma County and Portland.
Sunday, October 12 the Conference focus will shift to local entrepreneurs and their stories around local capital.
The Conference costs $10 in advance and $15 at the door, and is sponsored by Avista Utilities, Sunshine Disposal & Recycling, McKinstry, Numerica Credit Union, Pacificad, EcoDepot, Unico, the Community Building Foundation, Jeffrey Felts, and STCU.
