Volti Season Subscription 2014/2015
Volti, San Francisco's award-winning, leading-edge new music vocal chamber group, embarks upon an exciting 36th Season. The highlight of the season is the premiere of "Pandora's Gift" in May, a major interdisciplinary performance piece by Mark Winges, with a libretto by Denise Newman and staging by Erika Chong Shuch.
Volti also makes its debut as an opera chorus in "Death with Interruptions" by Kurt Rohde, presented by the Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in March.
Subscribers save 25% off single-ticket prices and receive priority seating for "Pandora's Gift" in May.
November 1, 2014 -- "Youth & Music" -- we showcase the high school choirs we mentor in our Choral Institute program, sharing the stage with Volti.
November 21 and 23, 2014 -- "Want Me: Songs of longing and desire" -- Everybody wants something. Love, power, money, respect, faith -- these objects of desire inspire composers Aaron Jay Kernis, Stacy Garrop, Carl Schimmel, Gabriela Lena Frank, Huck Hodge and Mark Winges. We premiere Part 1 of "Pandora's Gift," a preview of the full performance in May.
March 19 and 21, 2015 -- "Death with Interruptions" -- Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents a new dramatic musical work based on Nobel Prize winner José Saramago's novel "Death with Interruptions." With music composed by Kurt Rohde and a libretto by the distinguished UC Berkeley historian Thomas Laqueur, the story recounts what happens when death, who lives in an unnamed Iberian country with her taciturn scythe, falls in love with the principal cellist of a local orchestra and fails to claim his life. Soprano Nikki Einfeld, baritone Daniel Cilli, tenor Christopher Bengochea and cellist Leighton Fong are joined by Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, noted San Francisco choir Volti San Francisco and director Majel Connery in the first Left Coast opera production. The concert opens with a contrasting take on the imagined embodiment of death, Schubert's, from his famous string quartet.
May 15, 16, 17, 2015 -- "Pandora's Gift" -- Volti's Resident Composer Mark Winges explores the myth of Pandora's Box in a confluence of music, poetry, theater and dance, with poet Denise Newman providing the libretto and director/choreographer Erika Chong Shuch staging Volti and the young singers of Ensemble from Piedmont East Bay Children's Choir. The concert opens with premieres from our two young-composer-competition winners, Ryan Brown and Liza White.
