On Christmas Night: From Darkness Into Light
During December, most of the time it is dark out there. The sun is receding, the moon is waning, the nights are expanding, and light, in so many ways, is stepping back from our lives.
The winter solstice promises the return of the light, but even then it comes to us slowly, incrementally, as the sun greets us for just a few more moments each day. This is a time of year when universally, the world's faith traditions acknowledge that darkness exists, both physically and metaphorically.
On Christmas Night we will begin by first acknowledging the presence of darkness in our world and in our lives, and then we hope to light the way. Please join the Seattle Choral Company for this annual holiday tradition. Arrive early for our traditional family carol sing-along from 7:30 to 7:45 p.m., and then enjoy pre-concert carols played by the Resonance Handbells!
The music will include the following holiday works:
First Half Maria Matrem Virginem Arranged by Michael McGlynn Let No Mortal Flesh Keep Silence Arranged by Donald McCullough O Magnum Mysterium By Fredrik Sixten The First Nowell Arranged by Ola Gjeilo In the Deep Midwinter Arranged by Ola Gjeilo Away In a Manger Arranged by Ola Gjeilo Lo How a Rose/The Rose Arranged by Craig Hella Johnson
Second Half Gloria By Jan Sandström I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day By J. David Moore Star Song By Edward Henderson Chanukah Suite Arranged by Jason Robert Brown The Clear Blue Light of Morning By Dolly Parton/Arranged by Craig Hella Johnson Alleluia By Ralph Manuel
Music and sudden light Have interrupted our routine tonight, And swept the filth of habit from our hearts. O here and now our endless journey starts. from "For the Time Being: A Christmas Oratorio" by W.H. Auden
