Maine Family Planning presents MONICA SIMPSON of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective
As Executive Director of the SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, Monica Simpson is a nationally recognized facilitator, organizer, and speaker in the reproductive justice field. A native of North Carolina and proud graduate of Johnson C. Smith University, one of the country's historic black universities, Monica came out as a same-gender loving woman while attending undergrad. After graduation, as the Charlotte Lesbian & Gay Community Center's Operations Director, Monica was the first person of color hired there. In 2005 she became the Ujamaa Coordinator for Grassroots Leadership, training young African Americans in philanthropy, fundraising, and activism. Monica moved to Atlanta, GA to work with SisterSong in 2010.
Reproductive justice considers not just access to reproductive health care, but considers all aspects of women and teens' reproductive lives. In addition to supporting the right to contraceptive and abortion care, Maine Family Planning recognizes and advocates for women's rights to have healthy pregnancies and to raise their children with dignity in safe, healthy environments.
Reproductive justice theory argues that the right to privacy in reproductive decision making doesn't mean anything for women who don't have the economic and social power to exercise that right. Reproductive justice gives pro-choice individuals opportunities to advocate for increased access to prenatal care, for equitable family leave policies and affordable child care, for Medicaid funding for abortion services, and other policy issues that support women throughout their reproductive lives.
