This workshop is a rare opportunity to explore dance and music collaboration with contemporary dance maverick Douglas Dunn and his long time musical collaborator Steven Taylor.
"Mr. Dunn is a prolific choreographer whose incisive dances marry rigor with an absurdist edge. Extremes define Mr. Dunn, who performed with both the Merce Cunningham Dance Company and Grand Union, the experimental performance collective." The New York Times, by Gia Kourlas, Jan 2014
Who is it for? The workshop is targeted towards professional dancers and musicians, who have either completed a formal training program or have professional experience in their chosen field. It also presupposes the idea of dancers and musicians as creators, and thus seeks those that wish to create in a collaborative way, in some form or another. Ideally, the workshop will include 20 participants (10 dancers/choreographers & 10 musicians/composers), up to a maximum of 28.
What will happen? The premise of the workshop is straightforward: A morning session devoted to warm-up, training, and preparation, with dancers and musicians in separate studios, and an afternoon session with all participants working, experimenting and creating together. The morning session is comprised of technical experimentation with dancers and musicians in separate studios. The spaces are first available for warm-up before each instructor guides their specific group through a series of exercises, some more formal than others. The warm-up may be an improvisational score, or a codified technique class, or a task-based proposal. Douglas and Steven aim to open up the minds of the participants to the possibilities within his/her own art form, and develop the appropriate exercises, using their instinct and intuition in the moment.
The afternoon session is devoted to compositional play across disciplines, exploring ways in which dance and music can coalesce into small studies. Questions about effective collaboration will be explored, while a language around dance and music is developed, noting differences in terminology and interpretation.
The participants will make connections across disciplines, and grow to understand more about the other form. The relaxed atmosphere, without a focus on product, will encourage effective collaborative communication and stimulate creative exploration and play.
