Today more than ever, we love to talk about food, perhaps even more than we love to eat. In her new book, Word of Mouth, Priscilla Ferguson documents the language that explains culinary practices and how what we say about food says a great deal about our world and our place in it. Drawing on a broad range of cultural documents from interviews, cookbooks, and novels to comic strips, essays, and films, Ferguson will discuss the ways food allows us to come to terms with and make our place in the 21st century, reconciling pain and pleasure, tradition and innovation, routine and creativity, individual desire and collective responsibility.
Priscilla Ferguson has a PhD from the Department of French at Columbia and is a professor in the Department of Sociology at Columbia. Her previous books include Paris as Revolution: Reading the 19th-Century City and Accounting for Taste: The Triumph of French Cuisine.
Following Dr. Ferguson's talk, the Amelia Award for excellence in the field of culinary history will be presented to Nahum ("Nach") Waxman, founder of the world-renowned gastronomic bookstore Kitchen Arts and Letters in Manhattan.
The lecture and award ceremony are free and open to the public. The event will be held in Buell Hall on the ground floor East Gallery.
You do not need to purchase a ticket to attend the lecture, but you must RSVP here.
