This beautiful, ancient Marian hymn celebrates the occasion of Mary's visitation to her cousin, Elizabeth. In the narrative, after Mary greets Elizabeth, who is pregnant with the future John the Baptist, the child moves within Elizabeth's womb. When Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith, Mary sings what is now known as the Magnificat in response. At this concert, we'll hear two distinct yet equally beautiful settings of the Magnificat one by J.S. Bach and one by contemporary composer, John Rutter.
The Bach setting is quintessential Johann with wonderful, interwoven choral counterpoint and dramatic arias by a solid quartet. The work also includes an additional five movements that are intended to be sung if the performance is close (or, in our case, close enough) to Advent.
The Rutter setting has a very Latin American feel to it, and includes not only the traditional Magnificat text, but also a 15th Century poem that compares Mary to a rose, as well as a few other textual departures. Scored for mezzo soprano and chorus with orchestral accompaniment, it made its Carnegie Hall debut in 1990.
