Live at the Hive 10/19: The Fam Fiction Tour: MegaRan, Coolzey, and Fresh Kils and more
Random aka MegaRan: "One of the most prolific and innovative rappers of the 21st Century," -Phoenix New Times. "Random's proven he can excel in storytelling, punchlines, poignancy, freestyling and, well, pretty much any other way you can measure an MC." LA Weekly
Random, aka Mega Ran, or Random Beats. Teacher, Rapper, Hero. If you put video games, the 80s, hip-hop, soul music, jazz and standup comedy into a blender and hit "puree," you'd have something close to The Mega Ran Experience. Ran cut his teeth in the city of Philadelphia as a moonlighting emcee and producer, performing, freestyle rapping, producing and later engineering at a studio. After relocating to Phoenix, competing in the Scribble Jam emcee battle championships and taking an early exit, Ran almost quit before he was even started, when a creative lightning bolt struck, and a fire was lit. Retro video games were the catalyst. Random began the transformation into Mega Ran, his alter-ego, an ode to the classic video game character Mega Man. After creating a tribute album and receiving an unprecedented level of support and blessing from Capcom to continue, Ran was reborn and became a trailblazer in the budding "nerdcore" and chiptune subgenres, while coining his own term to describe what he had done, "Chip-Hop." Various video game developer co-signs and admiration from the genre's toughest critics have led to placements in TV, movies, university coursework, and of course, games. Random's music and story have been shared on stages across the world, on television (ABC/NBC News, ESPN, Portlandia, Tosh.O, WWE Wrestling) and in leading music, gaming and tech publications, print and online. Today, Random is no longer a teacher by title, but maintains a rigorous touring and recording schedule, traveling the world to entertain and educate through the gift of rhyme. http://megaran.com
Coolzey: Coolzey was borne out of the cornfields of central Iowa and now lives in Los Angeles. A boy who for some unexplained reason grew up only being able to listen to roughneck east coast hip hop and Weird Al Yankovic began looping tapes and rhyming into boomboxes as a child. After that there was Pavement, the Wu Tang Clan, mushrooms, sex, and America. This is the result. Coolzey passed around handmade lo-fi hip hop and rock demos (Akstoopid, ROYGBIV, Coolzey and the Sucker MCs) until 2007 when he began releasing a series of 3 EPs (He Did, Soixante-Neuf, and Coolzey vs PRZM) that preceded his first official full-length release 'The Honey' which dropped in January of 2010 and also toured extensively with the likes of Joe Jack Talcum of the Dead Milkmen, Louis Logic, Sadat X of Brand Nubian, Akil the MC of Jurassic 5, and Raashan Ahmad of the Crown City Rockers. He also started a collective of regional promoters in cities whose mission was to provide a week-long route through the heartland for underground hip hop artists to path through and connect with their fan base in smaller market towns like Duluth, MN, Iowa City, IA, Oshkosh, WI, and Columbia, MO called the Midwest Corridor. Some artists who passed through this corridor were Pigeon John, Vast Aire of Cannibal Ox, and Prince Po of Organized Konfusion to name a few. In January of 2013 Coolzey signed with management and booking company Deep Thinka Records who helmed the co-release with Public School Records of the limited pressing (200 copies) of The Honey on vinyl through another successful Kickstarter campaign and sent Coolzey on tour across the US and Canada with bands as diverse as conscious rapper Raashan Ahmad to the female-fronted indie rock band Muscle. On October 7th, 2014 Coolzey's self-released second official full-length 'Hit Factory' will be available through Fake Four Inc's Four Finger Distro. In the album, he finds his niche as a songwriter, navigating hip hop, classic rock, punk, and pop in the spirit of influences like Ween, Beck, The Beastie Boys, and Outkast. http://coolzey.net
Fresh Kils: From behind the boards to the stage, there's not a spot of ground Fresh Kils' prolific career hasn't touched. And not just hip hop. It's true, you'll see Saigon and Ali Shaheed (ATCQ) grace his resume, but you'll also find the likes of Ron Sexsmith & The Buena Vista Social Club. His prowess on the MPC has seen him share the stage with many of hip hop's legends (Nas, De La Soul) as well as the best of the underground. With momentum & accolades growing each year, Fresh Kils' is poised for a sound system takeover unlike any we've seen in a long time. http://freshkils.bandcamp.com
