dweck-lec'-tic: Somi
East African vocalist and songwriter Somi's latest album "The Lagos Music Salon" (Sony/Okeh) is inspired by her recent 18-month creative sabbatical in Lagos, Nigeria. Now back in New York City, Somi dynamically weaves story-based lyrics with global jazz and soul to reflect on her West African sojourn. The result is a socially-conscious and deeply poetic body of work that The New York Times hails as "both serious and seductive." Often referred to as a modern-day Miriam Makeba and widely acknowledged as both artist and scholar, Somi is a TED Fellow, an inaugural Association of Performing Arts Presenters Fellow, a 2013 Park Avenue Armory Artist-in-Residence, and the founder of New Africa Live.
