L'OFFRANDE MUSICALE

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Les interprètes:
Francis Colpron, flûte traversière, Olivier Brault et Tanya LaPerrière, violons, Mélisande Corriveau, violoncelle, Eric Milnes, clavecin et orgue positif

THE MUSICAL OFFERING
A masterpiece by Johann Sebastian Bach

In 1747, old Bach visited Berlin and Potsdam at the invitation of Frederick II of Prussia. At Sans-souci, his summer palace, the king, who was an excellent flutist, set a challenge for the Cantor's extraordinary talents. He gave Bach a theme, and asked him to improvise a three-voice fugue on it, and then one in six voices. Bach declined to meet the latter challenge on the spot, declaring the theme inappropriate for such treatment. But once he had returned to Leipzig, he composed for Frederick The Musical Offering, a set of pieces exploring all the contrapuntal potential of the royal theme and including, as requested, a six-voice fugue, one of the most beautiful ever written.

The Composer:
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

Artists:
Francis Colpron, baroque flutes, Olivier Brault and Tanya LaPerrière, violins, Mélisande Corriveau, violoncello, Eric Milnes, organ and harpsichord

Francis Colpron, direction
