"Fly Low Jack and the Game" presented by the High Falls Film Festival

Summary:
When Eastman Kodak decided to focus its attention on producing an affordable motion picture for amateurs, the result was a mass phenomenon. The popularity of 16mm film was instantaneous. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Rochester, NY was the center for manufacturing film stock, and for making amateur movies.
Marion Gleason, the wife of Harold Gleason, George Eastman's personal organist was a friend and confidante of George Eastman; and one of the first female filmmakers. As a true amateur, with a passion for theatre, Ms. Gleason was called upon by Mr. Eastman to shoot early 16mm films and illustrate that making amateur movies was "as easy as using a pencil," an Eastman requirement.
The title "Fly Low Jack" is a play on the name of a popular card game "High-Low Jack" and was a parody of the Hollywood thrillers of its day. "FLJ" was shot in Rochester, NY with local actors, in less than 3 weeks, using a Kodak Cine Model B camera-mostly hand-held. The film was made for a cost of $1.35, not counting film, and was mostly spent on confetti.
The film premiered in the Little Theatre of the Memorial Art Gallery on 10/20/27, and later at Kilbourn Hall on 10/22/27. After the Rochester premiere, the film traveled around New York State. Fly Low Jack and the Game was so successful, it eventually screened in 125 cities in 32 states with a traveling crew of 6 men; and a dual turn table system for uninterrupted playback of music for the duration of the film.
