Jazz-A-F!RE Salute to Nokie Taylor with the Prime Cut Band featuring Naomi Moody
The Memphis Black Arts Alliance's Jazz-A-FIRE experience returns downtown to Memphis Sounds, at 22 North Second off Madison, September 28, the last Sunday of this month, 3 5 pm.
This set will salute William "Nokie" Taylor, a legendary musician whose trumpet skills and vocals have thrilled audiences around the world. Taylor has performed at London's Palladium, Carnegie Hall and the White House and, as a Stax Recording session musician, known primarily for his trumpet skills, has recorded with Dionne Warwick, Isaac Hayes and many more including a role as Harry in the 1995 film Without Air. A frequent contributor to Memphis' Freeworld Band and the Beale Street music scene, Nokie has contributed significantly to Memphis' history as a hotbed of musical talent and is recognized with a Note on Beale street. As a member of the faculty of MBAA's FireHouse Community Arts Academy he has been a skilled, motivational teacher of all band instruments He holds Bachelor of Arts in Music from the University of Arkansas, Pine Bluff (AR A, M & N), graduate studies at Wayne State University in Michigan
This September's Jazz-A-FIRE performers include The Prime Cut Band with pianist Audie Smith, drummer Andre' Holman, singer Frank Phillips and will be joined by fellow Prime Cut bassist, & FireHouse Community Arts Academy faculty & musical director Kent Suggs. Other professional music faculty of the FireHouse Community Arts Academy, vocalist Naomi Williams Moody, and guitarist, Lance Thompson will be featured. Amateur and professional jazz musicians and singers are invited to BYOI (Bring Your Own Instrument) and sit in and jam with the musicians during the final hour.
