FREE "Children's Short Films Program" presented by the High Falls Film Festival
This is a FREE Admission event. Secure your tickets here as there will be limited seating.

Curator:  Ruth Cowing

Genre:  Children's short films

Summary:

A collection of 14 films that creatively illustrate life and imagination for children. Three of the films were made with children involved in the creative process.  There are films from five countries, including a film made in Rochester (at the School #8 afterschool program).

Several of the films have gentle social messages (sharing, being grateful, hard work, friends come in all shapes and colors) and films that stress diversity of race, income levels and gender.

Titles:

Soup of the Day - Set to a rollicking doo-wop song by Canadian songwriter Zander Ary, this animated short film tells the amusing story of the dilemma a husband and wife face each time they go out to eat.

Funny Clay - A first-time claymation by children, meant to illustrate that love is the best way to solve a conflict.

Maccupation - A story about a squirrel named Mac, who finds an enormous acorn.  Greedily he boards himself in his home with the acorn to keep his newfound treasure to himself.  Over time Mac gets bored and lonely and comes to realize the value of friendship.

Ish - Ramon loves to draw. He draws everywhere and everything.  He never puts down his pencil until...his older brother, Leon points out that his drawings are not quite "right."  With one remark, Ramon's passion for drawing turns into a struggle for perfection.

Donald - A shoebox turns into a stage, animating a Scottish tale told in ballad form by the characters in the story.

My Mum is an Aeroplane - Mothers can have all kinds of different occupations and skills, but not many children have an airplane as a mother!  A young boy imagines his mother to be an airplane traveling to exotic  lands.

Pohyper - A characters swims between planets and every time he touches one, his T-shirt changes color or design.  When he lands, the same thing keeps happening to him and his friends.

My Strange Grandfather - A magical story about a young girl and her eccentric grandfather.   She is perpetually embarrassed and exasperated with him, but she eventually experiences a change of heart after one magical night.

Keep Moving - A short musical film to get you moving!

The Ant and the Grasshopper - A hard-working ant hears wonderful music coming from the distance.  Although she knows she should keep working, she can't help but try to find out where the joyful sounds are coming from.

Friends Come in All Shapes and Colors - A first-time music video created by children from the School #8 After School Program at a free hands-on animation workshop.

The making of Friends Come in All Shapes and Colors - a behind-the scenes look at making the short film.

Making it - Nineteen-year-old Noe Rueda grew up on Chicago's West Side.  He is the oldest of four siblings raised by a single mom.  As a boy, Noe watched his family struggle and decided to help.  Noe ttells Alex Fernandez, high school economics teacher, about launching his first business venture.

Gratitude - A girl reflects on questions that remind us of the precious gift of life, and the beauty all around us.
