Valley Concert Chorale - December Concert
Contrasts featuring: John Sebastian Bach's opening movement of Cantata 140 Wachet Auf or "Sleepers Awake" This is probably the best known of all Bach's cantatas and one of his happiest creations. This music takes a well-known chorale and transforms it into gold. We will hear this melody first in a version Bach wrote for organ solo, then the audience will be invited to sing the chorus and finally the chorale will be featured in this glorious Cantata movement. Sublime music. Bach at his best. Cecilia McDowall's Ave Maris Stella premiered in 2001 in Portsmouth, Engalnd. Described as "beautiful and moving" it begins in a peaceful way and continues on a voyage that encounters a bit of turbulence before returning to calm waters. McDowall has a "communicative gift that is very rare in modern music" She is inspired by extra-musical influences, rhythmic vitality with expressive lyricism. This is splendid, original music, atmospheric, tender and unaffected simplicity. This piece will touch your heart. It is hauntingly beautiful with a mystical aura. Dan Forrest's exquisite Christmas Lullaby, Wilberg's beautiful arrangement of the traditional In the bleak midwinter and Willan's timeless What is this lovely fragrance will also be included. And, a romp through the 12 days of Christmas from Gregorian chant to a pseudo-Sousa Stars and Stripes Forever that will bring a bit of laughter and more than a few smiles Traditional Carols for the audience to sing. Slow down! Stop your shopping! Take an evening to let the spirit of the season come into your heart. We'll put you in the mood for the best of holidays.
