Halloween Movie Show
The Centralia Fox Theatre continues its classic film series -- with a new twist. The Halloween Movie Show screens at 7:00 on Friday the 30th and again at 12:00 noon on Saturday the 31st.
The theatre will be decked out in spooky attire and volunteers are encouraged to come in costume. Audience members are similarly encouraged, especially for the Saturday noon matinee: it's scheduled to end just before the downtown trick-or-treating begins at 3:00 p.m.
The program is anchored by two short feature films. And they aren't cheesy horror films by any means -- they've both gotten a 100% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website, where numerous critics weigh in with their opinions. According to program producer David Underwood, this means that "all those critics watched these films and couldn't find a single thing that they didn't like -- and quite a few things that they did like."
The first half of the show features "The Most Dangerous Game," the 1932 RKO classic based on a prize-winning short story. An evil Russian count on a remote island lures unwary travelers to their doom and hunts them as prey. But when his prey is also a skilled and courageous hunter, it's a tense and fast-paced battle of wits and courage.
"The Most Dangerous Game" was produced by the same people who made 1933's "King Kong," and includes many of the same sets and actors. According to Underwood, "It's just as thrilling as 'Kong,' with a madman for the monster instead of a giant ape."
The second half of the show features a new movie made in the old style. "The Call of Cthulhu" is a 2005 silent film based on a 1926 short story by H.P. Lovecraft. With a rich and haunting symphonic score, and filmed in a vintage style that the producers call "Mythoscope," "Cthulhu" tells a tale of fear, madness, nameless cults, an ancient monster, and horrors best left unknown.
"The Call of Cthulhu" has been a hit at film festivals worldwide, playing to sold-out houses even with extra screenings added. Fox Theatre audiences will be able to purchase DVD copies of the film, CD's of the score and other related items.
The program is rated "mild" on the horror/salsa scale, with one or two very brief scenes of bloodletting. According to Underwood, "These films are of the 'good old days' type, where they didn't have to club you over the head to scare you . . . they just let it creep up and get a good hold on you."
Admission to the Halloween Movie Show is $5 per person or $12 per family (4 persons maximum). All proceeds benefit Historic Fox Theatre Restorations, a nonprofit group dedicated to returning the Fox to its original 1930s magnificence.
The Fox is located in historic downtown Centralia at the corner of Locust (Centralia College Blvd.) and Tower, one block south of Main Street.
