Frank Martin Mass / Baroque Heritage & Modern Age
The opening concert of the 2014-2015 Vancouver Cantata Singers season explores choral masterpieces by composers who, at one point in their careers, were considered neo-classicists. The central work in the program is the Mass for Unaccompanied Double Choir (1922 1924/1926) by the Swiss composer, Frank Martin.
The Martin Mass is universally considered one of the great choral masterworks of the 20th century, yet despite this the work remained unpublished for almost 40 years. Martin suppressed publication of the Mass for most of his lifetime because of his deeply rooted faith. (He was raised in a Swiss Calvinist family, and his father was a minister.) Martin himself said of the Mass, "I did not want it to be performed I consider it as being a matter between God and myself. I felt that an expression of religious feelings should remain secret and removed from public opinion".
Martin was convinced to release the Mass for performance and publication in 1963.
Included in this concert are other sacred works including:
Bach: Singet dem Herrn BWV 225 Bach: Komm, Jesu, Komm BWV 229 Stravinsky: Ave Maria Stravinsky: Credo Stravinsky: Pater Noster Bloch: Yih'yu L'ratzon Poulenc: Exultate Deo Orban: Daemon Irrepit Callidus
