THE TRAIN DRIVER by ATHOL FUGARD presented by Off Broadway West Theatre Company
Off Broadway West Theatre Company ("OBWTC") proudly announces the San Francisco/Bay Area "premiere" of The Train Driver, by Athol Fugard a play that explores guilt and redemption in post-Apartheid South Africa.
Synopsis:
Athol Fugard, the Tony-winning author of "Tsotsi" and "Master Harold" ... and the Boys, tells a powerful true story of the search for redemption in "The Train Driver." Which he calls his "most significant work in a 50-year career."
Set in Fugard's native South Africa, the drama follows Roelf, a white train driver devastated by unavoidably killing a black woman who stepped in front of his moving train with her child strapped to her back. Searching for answers and solace, Roelf travels to the township's graveyard where he meets an aged black gravedigger, Simon. His job is to bury the "nameless." Because of Simon's kindness, Roelf begins to cope with his own guilt and shame. Of this poignant journey the Los Angeles Times wrote, "[Fugard] remains a natural-born storyteller."
