Grandmother Workshop : Bengali Cuisine, "Ashima's Ranna"
In this class we will enjoy a superb Bengali feast! The inspiration for this class not only comes from our Indian Grandmother's heritage, but also from Jhumpa Lahiris book, Namesake."
The novel begins with the description of Ashima Ganguli preparing Jhal Muri, a popular Bengali street food, in her American apartment with Rice Krispies and Planters peanuts. In honor of the book we will prepare Jhal Muri (spicy puffed rice) along with several small traditional Bengali vegetarian plates including: Aloo Bhate (spicy mashed potato), Aloo Posto (Potato with poppy seed), Channa Dal with raisins and coconut, Sandesh (Bengali Dessert) and Ghee Bhat (Ghee Rice).
Our Grandmother for this workshop is Tanushree Bose. "Namesake" is very close to her heart because it reminds her of the struggle and accomplishments of her immigrant parents and their strong ties to Bengali culture. Growing up, every meal was a tribute to Bengali cuisine. Tanu started cooking regularly after she moved to USA seven years ago and she improved her cooking mostly by learning from mistakes and from recipes that her parents gave her over the phone or email.
Please join us to learn about Bengali cuisine and to savor Jhal Muri along with four other traditional Bengali vegetarian delicacies.
