Firebird
October colors and fall in the air, a fitting prelude to the surprise and intrigue of Jennifer Porter's all new contemporary choreography of Firebird, opening Ballet Bellevue's 30th season (1984-2014). Igor Stravinsky's famous and much-loved score is performed by live orchestra with Music Director/Conductor, Philip Tschopp.
One of the less widely known (neo)classical ballets dating back to Diaghiliv's Ballets Russes, Firebird has never before been performed on the Eastside. Porter's change to a contemporary setting nevertheless remains true to the original tale: the story of a man who stumbles into an ugly place full of evil and corruption, ruled by a cruel leader through trickery and intimidation. He discovers, pursues and finally sets free a magical creature, the Firebird, who later comes to his rescue. Set in the present, themes emerge of addiction, subjugation and hope.
Surprise and intrigue extend to fitting the 50-piece Firebird orchestra into Bellevue's only downtown venue where the orchestra pit limit is 34!
Ballet Bellevue is honored also to feature (first on the program) the Eastside premiere of Whim W'Him (Olivier Wevers, Artistic Director), in their contemporary Les Sylphides 2013, an "octet" (seven dancers and a table).
