"Hauptmann" By John Logan
Candid Theater Co presents Multi Tony (Red-winner best play and the most winning drama in Tony history) and Academy Award (Gladiator, Hugo and The Aviator) nominee John Logan's Hauptmann focuses on the investigation into the kidnapping of Charles Lindberg's young son. The investigation quickly turned to Bruno Richard Hauptmann a recent immigrant from Germany with loose ties to the Nazi party and a criminal record in his native country quickly became the sole focus of J. Edgar Hoover then head of the F.B.I. who used this sensational case to secure his place at the institution he gave his life to. Logan doesn't focus Hauptmann on the guilt or innocence of Bruno Hauptmann but rather uses this historical story to create an allegory for a post 9/11 United States. Where Laws like The U.S. Patriot Act create sweeping infringements on civil rights denying people suspected of terrorist activities access to representation, access to a speedy trial, or even access to a trial at all. Hoover in the 30's federalized the crime of Kidnaping allowing a similar force to be focused on Bruno Hauptmann.
