LAKE, Karl Blau, Miss Massive Snowflake
Lake Karl Blau Miss Massive Snowflake Wednesday, October 14th Backspace 115 NW 5th Ave
Lake Lake, a shifting group of members (of other bands) from Olympia, has a series of releases both catchy and odd. For example, "Lake Sandwitch" is a list of foodstuffs, that all in all would be a disgusting mixture of mayo, mustard, and cinnamon, but when all is said and done and spread out on bread, the ingredients are worthy of a taste. "Dissattisfied," a homesick lullaby, is equally depressing and cutesy; a rare feat. Their first full-length, self-titled album was recorded by Karl Blau at the Department of Safety in Anacortes, Washington and it's clear that Lake is dedicated to cultivating quirky sounds from many musical minds. His prolific, homegrown output is vast and varied and Blau has his toes in several projects, including fostering the slowly burgeoning music scene in his town at the Department of Safety; an all ages venue. Constructing sounds from every classification under the sun, his music is a hand-picked experiment in genre-bending, taking pride in the mistakes captured on his analog recordings. He's got a friend in K Records, releasing Nature's Got Away, in Fall 2008. He is also involved in the Kelp Lunacy Advanced Plagiarism Society, a series of compilations set to eventually total forty releases. His newest experiment in sound is to train his voice to sound like that of male African singers. Blau's dedication to frequent touring and output should be an inspiration to anyone with the means and desire to record music. More Info: http://www.myspace.com/karlblau http://www.kelplunacy.com
Miss Massive Snowflake Miss Massive Snowflake is a bizarre project of wacky themed albums about politics, family, and Christmas. Their releases, Queens Headache, Songs About Music, and Bender, are layed out on a bed of orchestral arrangements, featuring ex-Rollerball vocalist and trumpeter Shane de Leon, and two singers under the age of ten. Miss Massive Snowflake is on course with both the storytelling and epic soundscape of The Magnetic Fields, Rufus Wainwright, and Stephen Malkmus. "A noirish experimental project full of floating samples and manipulated electronics... kinda creepy." The Oregonian More Info: http://www.northpolerecords.org/bands/missmassivesnowflake
