Aono Jikken Ensemble: Japanese Girls at the Harbor
Oct 04
(Hiroshi Shimizu, 1933, 71 min)
Co-presented with SAM's Gardner Center for Asian Art and Ideas
Saturday, Oct 04 at 08:00PM
After spending the last few years touring internationally with Guy Maddin and his films, experimental music and performance ensemble Aono Jikken Ensemble returns home to Seattle and to Northwest Film Forum (nearly 10 years have passed since their first performance at the Film Forum during the 2005 Ozu festival).
Co-presented with the Asian Art Museum's exhibition Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945, AJE performs a live score for Japanese Girls at the Harbor, rediscovered master director Shimizu's exquisite, lyrical silent drama from 1933. The film chronicles the complex relationships of a young Japanese woman with a circle of Eurasian friends in the cosmopolitan port city of Yokohama.
This performance features the premiere of a new live music and sound score, with benshi narration in Japanese and English. Aono Jikken Ensemble's music combines traditional Asian, western, and world instruments, found objects, sound toys, and specially created sound devices made of metal, bamboo, kelp and other materials. Special ticket pricing: $15 general admission / $12 SAM and Film Forum members.
Additional performance: Sunday, October 5 at 3pm (at SAAM).
