Zombie Cop Stage Reading
Harvard Square Script Writers (HSSW) in collaboration with Women in Film and Video/New England (WIFV/NE) proudly present Zombie Cop, a sci-fi comedy written by HSSW member Joel Karlinsky. The story follows Stanley Fisher, a brilliant and principled undercover cop framed for the murder of his partner. After his execution, he awakens to find himself reanimated as Officer Z59, part of a fantastic, but ill-conceived, government experiment where death row alums are wiped of their memories and groomed to join a super-powered police force of ZOMBIE COPS.

Stanley is paired with an athletic and enthusiastic female trainee, Z33, who quickly forms an attachment to her mentor.  Together they fight crime and escape the confines of the Zombie Academy in a quest to live as "normal people" and to prove Stanley's innocence.  Along the way, they battle the arch criminal Gunther Saroyen and his gang of henchmen and women and are reacquainted with Stanley's former fiancĂ©e.  As things unravel at the Academy and a weapon of not-quite mass destruction is stolen by the villains, the two zombies must decide if they are willing to come out of the shadows and save the day.

Imagine if Mel Brooks wrote Blade Runner - Zombie Cop promises a night of raucous entertainment.

Karlinsky, a Professor of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at BU, describes his inspiration for the script, "Zombies have traditionally been a representation of the worst part of the human id: mindless, uncontrolled destruction. I thought it would be interesting to have a zombie struggle with who he really is and I write comedy so it had to be funny." The script was recently selected as a quarter-finalist in the Scriptapalooza Screenplay Competition.

Theatrical Director Christine Cannavo, also an HSSW member, actress, writer and veteran of ImprovBoston and Improv Asylum, has assembled a large all-star cast including comedians Matt McLaughlin as Z59, Michelle Barbera as Z33, with Bill Folman and Elyse Schuerman, as the arch criminal Gunther Saroyen and his murderous sidekick Lucy.

"We see this stage reading as a wonderful opportunity to showcase local screenwriting and acting talent," elaborates HSSW's Director Genine Tillotson, "And audience talk-back will give us invaluable feedback that you just can't get when conducting a standard script review."
