Holiday Cooking Classes in the Mission
* Two new classes for people who want to learn how to cook using simple, timeless methods and organic, seasonal ingredients for the holidays. Set in an art gallery in the Mission, we will learn recipes, explore seasonal ingredients, and revive some old traditions while making new ones. * No experience necessary. Beginners and experienced cooks welcome. * Sign up for one or both classes, or enroll a friend in the spirit of giving experiences instead of things for the holidays this year.
Gluten-Free Holiday Cooking Sunday Nov 8, 2009 a.Muse Gallery, 614 Alabama St, San Francisco, 94110 noon-5 PM $75 A class on gluten-free holiday cooking in time for Thanksgiving and the winter holidays. Learn how to make gluten-free pie crust from scratch and pumpkin pie from whole pumpkins. We will explore gluten-free alternatives to Stuffing using seasonal grains, fruits, and nuts, and make real eggnog and mulled wine for winter socials. We will discuss what's in season this winter, and how to work with it, for beautiful salads that make use of the season's best ingredients, like chicories, pomegranates, persimmons, and meyer lemons. While the emphasis is on the plant-based foods that nourish us and round out our holiday get-togethers, omnivores can also take home instructions on how to brine and cook turkeys for tender results. The goal of this class is to learn to make holiday classics by hand and make them gluten-free at the same time, for anyone who is interested in learning how to cook their own holiday meal or bring gluten-free dishes to social gatherings. Omnivores and vegetarians welcome.
Jewish Holiday Cooking Sunday December 6, 2009 a.Muse Gallery, 614 Alabama St, San Francisco, 94110 noon-5pm $75 In addition to classic techniques for making the perfect potato latke, we will learn how to culture home-made creme fraiche and make applesauce from scratch, while preparing a number of variations on the latke, including inspiration from Eastern European, Middle Eastern, and North African traditions, as well as a vegan version and gluten-free version. For omnivores, we will learn how to cure salmon gravlax at home and make simple winter root vegetable accompaniments that pair well with latkes. On the sweeter side, we will learn to make sufganiyot, Israeli jelly donuts traditionally served for Hanukkah. The festival of lights for food lovers, Jewish and non-Jewish alike. All are welcome.
