TunnelWalk & Rail Tour
Meet your guide at MetroRail's Fannin-South Station. She will assist you in purchasing your $1.25 MetroRail ticket.
Start your tour by boarding MetroRail's Red Line at the Fannin-South Station and riding 30 minutes north to the University of Houston-Downtown Station. Look out the windows along the way for great views of Reliant Park, the Texas Medical Center, the Museum of Fine Arts and the Mecom Fountain in the Museum District, Midtown's Trinity Episcopal Church and unique murals, and the high-rise buildings in downtown.
Exit the train at the University of Houston-Downtown Station for a rest stop and photo op from the plaza looking south at Allen's Landing and the downtown skyline. Restrooms are available.
Board MetroRail's southbound train and exit at the Preston Street Station in the old Town of Houston. Walk two blocks to 600 Travis Street, which boasts the tallest building in Texas. Enter 600 Travis and go up to the sky lobby on the 60th floor for a great view looking west towards The Galleria. Restrooms are available.
Return to street level and go outside for a photo op in front of Joan Miro's colorful sculpture, Personage and Birds. Cross Milam Street and enter Pennzoil Place's dramatic lobby, designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee in 1976 for developer Gerald Hines. Take Pennzoil Place's unique elevators down to the Tunnel, where you'll have a 30-minute rest stop for snacks, shopping or resting in the food court. There are no restrooms in the food court or the Tunnel.
After your break, walk underground beneath 811 Louisiana Street, Two Shell Plaza, and the Esperson Buildings on your way to 919 Milam, the hub of the Tunnel System. There are a few snacking and shopping opportunities along the way. Continue through the Tunnel beneath Commerce Towers and the McKinney Place Garage on your way to 1000 Main Street.
Exit the Tunnel and look at the USS Houston Monument and at the fountains and sculptures at Main Street Square.
Board MetroRail again and continue south to the end of the line at Fannin-South. If you wish, you can end your tour at Midtown's Ensemble-HCC Station, the Museum District Station, or the Hermann Park-Rice U Station.
Driving Directions to the Fannin-South Station: METRO's Park & Ride Lot at the Fannin-South Station is located between Knight Road and Fannin Street and between West Bellfort and Loop 610. You can enter the lot from Knight Road, Fannin, or West Bellfort. For an online map, type in the intersection of Knight Road and West Bellfort.
