The Far West (world premiere)
Luminous Voices launches its 2014/2015 season with a world premiere by Calgary composer Zachary Wadsworth. The cantata will feature tenor soloist, Lawrence Wiliford, with string orchestra and choir. Commissioned by James and Elaine Hutchison, this powerful work addresses the AIDS crisis through poems of Tim Dlugos, who died of the disease in 1990 while studying to become a priest. The concert also features Bach's famous Cantata BWV 39 "Brich dem Hungrigen dein Brot," (Break your bread for the hungry). "... the choral singing was exemplary, the singers evidently enjoying the beautiful lines they were given to sing. Conductor Timothy Shantz led the choir with both energy and grace, drawing from the ensemble sounds that were refined, balanced, and filled with inner life." Kenneth DeLong, Calgary Herald
