More about the HONK! Phenomenon:
Across the country and around the world, a new type of street band is emerging. Acoustic and mobile, borrowing repertoire and inspiration from a diverse set of folk music traditions New Orleans second line brass bands, European Klezmer, Balkan and Romani music, Brazilian Afro Bloc and Frevo traditions, as well as the passion and spirit of Mardi Gras and Carnival these "honkers" all share a commitment to several core principles. Metaphorically speaking, they honk their horns for the same reasons motorists honk theirs: to arouse fellow travelers, to warn of danger, to celebrate milestones, and to just plain have fun.
About the bands:
Radio Kaizman is one of the newer entries into France's massive brass band or "Fanfare" scene. The Lyonnaise band is "deeply inspired by urban sonorities, by the groove and rhythm of New Orleans marching bands, accentuated by slight notes of swing and Latin influences... steered by spellbinding feminine voices, with veritable heatwaves vibrating the room and engulfing the senses."
Les Muses Tanguent: From the streets of Paris, the women of Les Muses Tanguent have followed their dream to radicalize the French Chanson and reinterpret jazz, pop, rhythm and blues, and other traditions.
Chaotic Noise Marching Corps is a Seattle based renegade marching band that is dedicated to "keeping the tradition of music, performance, energy, havok, discipline and sheer stupid fun alive in Seattle's streets." Chaotic Noise produces high energy shows using a wide variety of musical genres.
Environmental Encroachment (EE) from Chicago creates distinctive entertainment environments. Performances can include costumes, live music, parades, fire spinning, hula hoops, antics, and audience interaction. EE's music uses Latin, North African, and traditional American rhythms. Songs are folkloric fusions, classics and our creations inspired from New Orleans Second Line, Jazz and Rock.
Himalayas is a marching band experience like no other. Preferring to play on the street and have its audience participate in the show, they play anywhere & anytime and have been known to play on bridges, mountain tops, beaches, in elevators, on grammy nominated records, on huge uptown stages & in dinky downtown clubs.
