"In his house at R'lyeh dead Cthulhu waits dreaming"
The Visceral Company presents an all-new adaptation of H.P. LOVECRAFT'S "THE CALL OF CTHULHU"
The Visceral Company, winner of "best LA theater season" accolades for 2013 from review aggregate site Bitter Lemons, is pleased to present the world premiere of an all-new adaptation of H.P. LOVECRAFT'S "THE CALL OF CTHULHU" for the 2014 Halloween season
From the same creative team behind last year's highly acclaimed, sold-out Lovecraft: Nightmare Suite, this production of H.P. LOVECRAFT'S "THE CALL OF CTHULHU" is adapted and performed by NY Drama Desk nominee Frank Blocker (Southern Gothic Novel) and developed and directed by Visceral's artistic director and LA Weekly Theater Award winner Dan Spurgeon.
H.P. LOVECRAFT'S "THE CALL OF CTHULHU" is based on two short stories originally published in pulp magazine Weird Tales The Hound (1926) and The Call of Cthulhu (1928). The latter has come to be widely regarded as one of Lovecraft's most important and enduring works and Lovecraft himself venerated as the godfather of modern horror.
Blocker performs all 9 characters in the show, from a Brown University archaeologist, to a New Orleans police detective, to a Norwegian sailor and his wife. All of these personae are linked together across several decades, caught up in the mystery of an ancient, frightful clay idol of the alien god Cthulhu, the cult that worships him and the doomsday his awakening will bring.
H.P. LOVECRAFT'S "THE CALL OF CTHULHU" will play Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 pm and Sunday matinees at 3 pm, from September 26 through December 6, 2014, at the Lex Theatre, 6760 Lexington Ave., Hollywood, CA.
Parental guidance is recommended for young children. Due to the nature of the performance, there can be no late seating.
Set, puppet, and prop design is by Johnny Burton; lighting design by Joshua Silva; sound design by Tyler Burton and Dan Spurgeon; original music by Tyler Burton; technical direction by Ben Womick, and costume design by Moe Marks.
The Visceral Company, called "LA's premiere horror theatre troupe" by Fangoria magazine, specializes in works that explore the dark, strange, and macabre killer shows from darker places. We hope to encourage further onstage exploration of the horror, thriller, and science fiction genres, which have been underrepresented in theatre, and to build an appreciation of theatre in the younger audiences that are traditionally drawn to them.
