Blackbird
Blackbird USA, 2014, 99 minutes Director: Patrik-Ian Polk
Blackbird centers around a talented teenager (played by newcomer Julian Walker) struggling with his sexuality, his religion and a troubled home. High school choirboy Randy is practically a perfect saint: a virgin who prays regularly, and doesn't curse, drink, or indulge in pleasures of the flesh. Unfortunately, Randy also can't stop having fantasies that Jesus might not approve of. Many around him presume he's gay and don't fuss. But Randy is in a mighty struggle for self-acceptance. During his last semester in high school., he finds himself in a non-traditional production of Romeo & Juliet, a student film that pairs him with a potential love interest, as well as a slow reconciliation with his long-absent father. The combination will push Randy toward new and surprising discoveries. Stars Academy Award winner Mo'Nique (Precious) as Randy's mess of a mother. Angelique Smith
