Snap on 2&4 w/ Evan Cobb & the Modern-day Jazz Quintet
On Friday, September 12 at 8pm, NJW welcomes back to the Jazz Cave saxophonist Evan Cobb with his band, the Modern-Day Jazz Quintet!

"Cobb's fluency on the horn neatly disguises the complexities of his improvisations  complexities that gird but remain subservient to his overriding concern with propulsive melody." - Neil Tesser, The Examiner

"As a tenor saxophonist, Cobb goes back to [Dexter] Gordon and [John] Coltrane, forward into the present but never abandoning the basic principles of melodic, swinging improvisation. His quintet always sounds larger than its numbers: Cobb has a bright future as a player, arranger, and composer." - Cadence Magazine

Since making Nashville his home in the fall of 2008 (by way of New York and Chicago), Evan Cobb has become one of Nashville's most in-demand woodwind players. Cobb has performed with myriad ensembles including the Nashville Symphony, the Nashville Jazz Orchestra, The Dynamites featuring Charles Walker, JD Souther, Cage the Elephant, and Aretha Franklin. Also an active educator, Cobb is the adjunct professor of saxophone at Bemidji State University, the director of our own Nashville Jazz Workshop Summer Camp and NJW Scholarship Program, and keeps a large studio of private students on the saxophone, oboe, flute, and clarinet.

As host of our popular monthly jam sessions, Cobb turned original tunes workshopped for those jams into the successful debut album Falling Up in 2011 that charted well on JazzWeek and continues to be in regular rotation.

Joining Cobb on the date are trumpeter Jamey Simmons, pianist Bruce Dudley, bassist Jonathan Wires, and drummer Josh Hunt, a can't miss "modern-day jazz quintet." The band is replete with talented, virtuosic professionals, yes, but these musicians also embody the necessary virtues of jazz in the 21st century: active in performing, teaching, & promoting jazz AND its related musics, planting seeds of excitement about jazz with young musicians. This Modern-Day Jazz Quintet will be performing all original music which is targeted for a soon-to-be-recorded second album.

Admission is $20 / $10 high school and college students with ID. Tickets will go on sale Monday, September 1 at 10AM and will be available online on this page, by phone 24/7 at Brown Paper Tickets (800-838-3006) or during business hours at the NJW office (242-5299).
