Music
DJ Mark E. Moon (aka Jef Czekaj) is an illustrator, cartoonist, musician, and poster artist who lives and works in Somerville. When DJing he performs with the Big Digits, a group that was named Best Dance/Electronic act in the Boston Phoenix's Best Music Poll. His critically-acclaimed comic, Grampa and Julie: Shark Hunters is read by more than a million children monthly in Spanish and English in Nickelodeon Magazine; a collection of the first three years of the strip was compiled for a book of the same name published by Top Shelf Productions. Named as one of Boston Magazines hot visual artists, Jef co-founded the Somerville Comic Collaborative and is a founding member of the Handstand Command music collective.
Mr. Sister Amelia Emmet plays dark yet infectious pop songs with a lush assortment of instruments. Originally known as Dogs and Trains and later as Brother/Sister, Amelia expertly marries the sounds of accordion, banjo, trombone, and acoustic guitar with her captivating voice and exceptional lyrics. Amelia is frequently accompanied by Faces on Film singer Mike Fiore and Hallelujah the Hills Elio DeLuca and Brian Rutledge.
Shepherdess Part heart-felt folk/part balls-out rock, Shepherdess pairs blistering guitar solos with glimmering vocals, and traditional instruments with bizarre effects. The end result can be compared only to Cat Power on speed. Or perhaps Kate Bush fronting The Wipers. Or Captain Beefheart falling, hitting his head, and waking up believing that he is Built to Spill. Hilken Mancini (Gramercy Arms, Punk Rock Aerobics, Fuzzy) plays guitar and sings and Emily Arkin (The Operators, The Quicunx) plays violin in the acoustic version of Shepherdess; the full-on band includes rhythm section Mike Savage (Fudge, Death Vessel) on drums and Winston Braman (Thalia Zedek Band, Consonant, Fuzzy) on bass. Their first, self-titled record was released on Kimchee Records in 2007.
