The Neuroscience of Resilience
7 pm, Thursday, October 23, 2014 Mercy Corps Action Center 28 SW 1st Avenue, Portland, OR 97201 503-896-5747
Nothing demands greater performance under pressure than a disaster, whether you are an aid worker or a survivor. What does our brain look like when we experience fear and how does that impact our behavior?
Sarina Saturn, Ph.D. uses the evolving neuroscience of resilience to help us understand how we keep or lose control under fire. Conversely, Saturn will also talk about the neuroscience of more positive emotions -- her specialty is bridging lab-based neuroscience with the nuances of social psychology.
Cited in Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn's new book The Path Appears a primer on how to make a better world Saturn knows what our brain looks like when we feel compassion and can demonstrate the neurological effect of hope.
Her research has been featured in the New York Times, NPR's Science Friday, Scientific American Mind and other international outlets.
