Time, Distance, Memory - Standing Wave
Time, Distance, Memory is a programme of music inspired by the far corners of the Earth and the farthest reaches of imagination and memory. Hot on the heels of their most successful season yet, Standing Wave will perform three iconic pieces of 20th Century chamber music, George Crumb's "Eleven Echoes of Autumn", Claude Vivier's "Pulau Dewata", and Thomas Adès' "Catch".
The evening will feature the premiere of "Stolen Materials/Stolen Time", by Vancouver's Jennifer Butler, a composer whose music is known for its rich and resonant lyricism. "Walking in Claude's Footprints", Jordan Nobles' arrangement of Debussy's "Des pas sur la neige", will round out this programme of haunting, evocative chamber music.
Standing Wave is an ensemble of six exceptional musicians who perform contemporary music with virtuosity and style, cutting across musical landscapes with sharpness, wit and intelligence. The ensemble is equally comfortable performing complex chamber compositions, new music and works with electro-acoustics. Their adventurous programming and dynamic performances combine to capture listeners' hearts and imaginations, placing Standing Wave at the forefront of Canada's new music scene.
Since its formation in 1991, Standing Wave has presented an annual season of concerts in Vancouver, has toured across Canada, collaborated with Kokoro Dance, Ballet BC, Redshift Society, Rumble Theatre, and Vancouver New Music Society. They've been featured as part of the PuSh Festival, Vancouver New Music Festival, MusicFest Vancouver, the Victoria Symphony's New Currents Festival, Vancouver Pro Musica's Sonic Boom Festival, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival. In January, 2014, Standing Wave performed at the inaugural Vancouver Symphony Orchestra New Music Festival. Released in 2013, Standing Wave's third album, "Liquid States", was nominated for two Western Canadian Music Awards.
"It's no cinch to accurately reproduce this dizzying beauty, but Vancouver's most accomplished contemporary chamber music group did that, without even breaking a sweat." - Alex Varty, The Georgia Straight
