S'Wonderful! The Gershwins and The Hollywood Musical
Join host Philip Harwood for a lively celebration of the legendary brothers whose brilliant music and witty lyrics transformed musicals forever
After many Broadway musical successes, and the creation of their folk opera, Porgy and Bess, George and Ira Gershwin ventured to Hollywood. Film Historian Philip Harwood takes us all on a wonderful musical journey, through the original Gershwin fi lm musical Shall We Dance (1937), starring Astaire and Rogers, as well as the wonderful musicals featuring the songs of the Brothers Gershwin, including Girl Crazy, An American In Paris, Funny Face, Rhapsody In Blue, and others. "Who could ask for anything more?"
Philip Harwood has had a life-long passion for the arts, especially film. He is currently an Adjunct Lecturer in the Hutton House Lectures at LIU: C.W. Post, and teaches at the 92nd Street Y, and the JCC in Manhattan. He was Coordinator for Lifelong Learning at Queens College, where he also programmed the annual Summer Film Festival. He is a published author: his essay, Jack Benny In Hollywood, appears in the anthology, Well! Reflections On The Life And Career of Jack Benny, published by Bear Manor Media.
