Tropicália: Film Event at The Velaslavasay Panorama
The 7pm screening is now SOLD OUT. A 3pm Matinée screening of Tropicália is now available.
The Velaslavasay Panorama and Radio Afrique in collaboration with Mr. Bongo Records (UK) are pleased to host the Los Angeles debut of Tropicália, a documentary film by Marcelo Machado.
Tropicália tells the story of the rich artistic and cultural movement born in the late 1960s in Brazil. From a collective of like-minded souls, 'tropicália' used music, poetry, theatre, and avant-garde visual art to confront the political establishment. The film highlights the struggle 'tropicália' artists endured to protect their right to freely express revolutionary thought at a time of political turbulence in Brazil.
These artists took sonic cues from traditional Brazilian music, psychedelic rock, and African rhythms, and was led by the likes of Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Os Mutantes and Tom Zé. The tropicalist movement had a big impact on the popular music scene, and was an intense presence in Brazilian television, press and radio.
Tropicália has been exhibited in over 15 countries around the world, participating in major film festivals, including the 38th Telluride Film Festival (USA), 17 It's All True (opening), 14th BAFICI (Argentina), Visions du Reel (Switzerland), Winter Film Festival (Uruguay), World Cinema Amsterdam (Netherlands), JIMFF (South Korea), 17th Milano Film Festival (Italy), San Sebastian (Spain), DocLisboa (Portugual) and many others.
