Spontaneous Fantasia at the Glendale Planetarium
Spontaneous Fantasia, the high-tech virtual reality show, is returning to the Glendale Planetarium October 9th with a completely new show entitled "The Omnicentric Universe".
Spontaneous Fantasia is the live virtual reality show created by J-Walt. He invented this groundbreaking art form in 2003 after years of work in visual effects and animation for movies, TV, and theme parks. In his varied career with companies such as Disney and Sony, J-Walt has received numerous awards and accolades, including an Academy Award and a THEA award.
The Omnicentric Universe is J-Walt's new Spontaneous Fantasia experience with the theme of cosmic and personal exploration. It's an ambitious work in which J-Walt creates a planet in real-time and populates it with plants, artifacts, and dancing creatures to tell a story of creation and process told through color, music, and movement. J-Walt explains the title of his piece: "There isn't a singular center to the universe, but the universe is not uniform and arbitrary either. We live in a universe of many centers -- they're everywhere. This is a paradox, but one which I celebrate."
The show is equal parts artistry and technological wizardry. This is a second-generation show for fulldome, in which J-Walt has invented new techniques and pushed the boundaries beyond what he initially pioneered in real-time animation performance. J-Walt's animations and music blend seamlessly in the state-of-the-art digital fulldome theater at the Glendale Community College Planetarium.
J-Walt performs a solo show of his own images and music, drawing virtual landscapes and geometric abstractions with computer interfaces he designed. The audience watches as J-Walt draws with a pen tablet and animates creatures and environments.
The pieces are highly improvisational -- each performance is unique. The worlds he creates are ever morphing and changing. He creates with the push of a button, but at the push of another, it's gone! Its his way of breaking away from the art as a polished, precious artifact. It can be something more loose, more dynamic, more spontaneous!
